The flying area around Lienz offers not only breathtaking views but also generally reliable weather conditions for paragliders and hanggliders. Nevertheless, the alpine terrain requires a good understanding of the local wind systems – especially the valley wind – as well as careful weather monitoring before each flight.

General Characteristics of the Weather Conditions in our Region
Valley Wind System
In Lienz, the valley wind is a key aspect of the daily weather pattern. In particular on sunny days, a distinct valley wind develops from the southeast (Drava Valley) during late morning, often persisting until late afternoon. This wind can reach speeds of 15 to 30 km/h in the valley floor – and occasionally even higher. For safe landings and takeoffs, this wind should be carefully considered and factored into flight planning.
Thermals
Thanks to its favorable location between the Lienz Dolomites to the south and the Zettersfeld plateau to the north, strong, reliable thermals often develop. The first updrafts form as early as late morning, developing into steady ones by the afternoon, and frequently offering opportunities for long cross-country flights. The thermals are generally well-structured, but can be weaker during periods of stable high pressure.
Wind Systems and Special Features
In addition to valley winds, slope winds or local wind shear can also become noticeable under certain weather conditions – especially during thunderstorms or with northerly winds. In such cases, particular caution is advised, as flying conditions can deteriorate very quickly. Early weather analysis and, if necessary, consultation with local pilots or flying schools is therefore strongly recommended.
Recommendation
We recommend that all pilots thoroughly check the current weather conditions before each flight and always prepare for possible changes throughout the day. The area around Lienz offers excellent flying conditions – by respecting the local weather patterns, every flying day will be a safe experience.

Weather Stations and Webcams nearby
In the area around Lienz, there are numerous weather stations and webcams that help assess current weather conditions for paragliding. The following three sources should be consulted before every flight:
- Zettersfeld – Webcam and Weather Station of the Cablecar
The best view of the conditions at the Steinermandl West launch site; the webcam is only updated every 30 minutes, the weather data however is always up-to-date. - Lienz Valley Bottom, 617m; Weather Station of Geosphere Austria (Graphics in burnair map)
This station is located slightly southeast of the Postleite landing site and reflects quite well the valley wind situation. - Hoher Sonnblick; 3,106m; Weather Station of Geosphere Austria (Graphics in burnair map)
This station, located directly on the main ridge of the Hohe Tauern, provides important information about north foehn wind events. When strong northwest winds blow on the Sonnblick, they will soon reach the mountain ridges further south.
